Excuse My English: Layering on the Light Side
Spring came to Vashon early this year, with a collection of colorful oil paintings by artist and geologist Stephanie Lasalle entitled “Excuse My English; Layering on the Light Side.” Her paintings represent the layering in life and nature and are full of insight, inspiration, and the hope that comes with the new growth of spring. Check out the aftermath in our Archive section.
About Us
The Two Wall Gallery is an informal collective of a few interested people who coordinate the use of an unclaimed space. The space is unclaimed only because the adjoining businesses allow us to use it for art displays. We continue to run a gallery there solely at their discretion. Two Wall Gallery is not a small business. Much of the time, nothing that is exhibited sells, and the rest of the time we just look for someone to pay for the snacks and drinks. If anything is sold, the purchaser deals directly with the artist. Many of the artists have day jobs and do art only as a hobby. So clearly, we're not in it for the money. There is no mailing address for the gallery, and we have no formal business structure. We have a sign out front, and that's it.
We think that the Two Wall Gallery was the brain child of Ben Meeker, who curated the space for several years prior to the current curators. At least, he named it, and opened the space to his students and others who were looking for a place to do something a little edgy. Current curators Greg Wessel and Jack Strubbe maintain that attitude. We have to keep in mind that there are retail businesses in the building, but they have been relatively forgiving and don't blink at nudes or political statements.
That's not to say that you can get away with anything at Two Wall. We've actually had to turn down some otherwise good work because we thought it too controversial. Some art is supposed to be controversial, so there's the rub.
We are open to suggestions and even hosting guest curators. If you have an idea for displaying your own work or the works of others, PLEASE contact us and ask.
